Q: Does the law of God not override the law of man?

Yes, but God’s natural law is not the question here…Jesus told us to obey the laws of the land:

They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” – Matthew 22:21

“Okay, but what if I’m in a foreign country and the drinking age is 18, and I’m 18?”

Aaahhh, the old “foreign country” argument, huh? I tried that loophole for a long time, too. This is the same thing as always following up the sex questions with “how far is too far?” It’s not just a matter of rules, but the questions we ask, often times reveal our true hearts…hearts fighting to live more for ourselves and less for God. If we really treated our sexuality as the gift of God that it is, than we’d try to embrace the truth that premarital sex is wrong, instead of asking the “how far” questions. Do you know what I mean? But that’s a different question…back to the show!

“For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it…” – Romans 8:7

True, if you’re of age in a foreign country it is not an unlawful act, but it still may be a sin. Often times people take advantage of that law, going over a border, specifically to drink. Even if they don’t get drunk, what are we proclaiming by doing so? Who is our God? Is it really about avoiding sin because we love God, or is it more like frantically searching for a loophole (where God can’t get mad) to do what we want, even if it might be bad for us or for others around us?

“…so as not to spend what remains of one's life in the flesh on human desires, but on the will of God.” – 1 Peter 4:2

If we’re really in love with God, and earnestly trying to live for Him, though we might ask the question, we know deep down what His truth is, and what our response should be…our lives shouldn’t be about “what can I get away with” or “how far is too far”, it should be about trying to live as God calls us to, totally for Him, in every situation and in the face of every temptation.

“…so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit.” – Romans 8:4
